A Special Visitor at the Library

By Jennifer Walton , Library engagement team lead

‘Twas the night before Xmas, and all through the shelves,
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even library elves.

The collections were sorted, not a book was astray,
In hopes staff could take a short holiday.

When out in the carpark came a whoop and a shout,
We sprang from our rest to see what the fuss was about.

Through the hot summer fog, a sleigh did appear;
It seemed Santa had stopped with his loyal reindeer.

With no chimney to scale, he knocked at the door.
Librarians asked, “What are you here for?”

“A problem,” he said, “it’s worse than it looks.
My sack has many toys but, alas, not one book!”

The publisher hadn’t filled his request,
But he knew the librarians could help him the best.

With so many titles and formats to read,
Library staff knew what each child would need.

So, sorting through shelves and selecting by hand,
They found the best and greatest books in the land.

Sack full of great reads, Santa offered thanks and then
Promised to restock the shelves before we opened again.

Back out the door and into the sleigh,
The reindeer took off—up, up, and away.

But we heard him exclaim with joy and a laugh,
“Merry Christmas to all of the library staff!”
