Editorial by Joanne Dillon (JD) - Literacy and Learning Programmes Librarian
With many library members now in possession of one of our colourful library cards it’s timely to remind you of some of the things you can do with this card.
Using your library card you can issue your own books, magazines and DVDs on our self check machines, even paying for fines and rental fees using the attached eft-pos machines or money stored on your library account. Some of you won’t know that you can also scan your card on the machines and then renew any books you want to keep longer, without even bringing them in. Of course, you can still phone us to do your renewals as many customers do.
At each of our three libraries you can also use our kiosks to add money to your library card – the kiosk accepts notes and coins as well as eft-pos. You can then use your library card as a debit card, using your balance to pay for any rental items you have borrowed and to pay for printing.
If you have the internet at home or on your phone you can log into our web based library catalogue at https://horowhenua.library.org.nz/. To do this you will need to enter your card number which is underneath your barcode and your password (speak with library staff if you need to update your password). Once logged in you can see when everything you have on loan is due back and in most cases renew them if you need more time. Each item can be renewed once before it needs to be renewed and if another customer has paid to reserve the item it won’t be renewable. While you are logged into your account you can place a reserve on something that is on loan to another borrower and enter a new purchase suggestion for a title we don’t have but you would like us to purchase.
Your library card also gives you free access to our collection of more than 3,000 ebook titles – you can borrow up to 6 ebooks at a time for 3 weeks each. You can also reserve ebooks that are out and if you forget to return them on time they will return themselves so you won’t ever have to pay overdue fines on an ebook.
Foxton Library will be closing at 5pm on Friday 10 November so that we can get busy moving into our brand new library at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom which is opening on Saturday 18 November. We encourage you to borrow more books than usual when you next visit Foxton Library so that you don’t run out while we’re closed. We will be telling you more about our new library and the grand opening in a few weeks time.
