Readers’ Advisory
One of a librarian’s favourite parts of the job is to assist customers to find their next piece of fiction to read for enjoyment. This is a significant part of public library work for staff members who work face-to-face with library borrowers. The library term for this is ‘Readers’ Advisory’ and it’s all about connecting readers with materials. You may have noticed that there is a library enquiries desk next to our iSite desk, librarians are available here all day for readers advisory and questions about other library services. It has been busy recently, with people looking for a relaxing summer read and with those participating in the Adult Reader’s Challenge looking for something outside of the box.
Our librarians all have different specialities (children’s, young adults, collection management, cataloguing, programming, purchasing books etc.) and as bibliophiles we all have our own favourite authors and genres. For example, I read fantasy and adventure and buy books for the graphic novel collection.
Readers’ Advisory can be helping someone find a great read, but it can also be showing someone resources to learn about authors, series, and more. For those who enjoy cruising the internet there are a few good reader’s advisory websites out there. There are copious amounts of blogs, podcasts, and YouTube videos all with extensive book reviews, articles, suggestions, read-alike lists and reading guides with discussion questions. You may be familiar with some of them. Goodreads (http://www.goodreads.com) is a popular book review website which allows users to make book lists, track read books, and see what friends are reading. Book ratings are completely based upon user reviews and recommendations.
Not to pander to our audience or anything, but we think the most valuable asset of any library is the staff. Our librarians are the frontline resource for keeping a library successful and engaged in our community and their collective knowledge and expertise help make the library the wonderful place that it is. So pop on down to the Library Enquiries desk – we are waiting!
