Summer is coming! Top Reads!
Pam Coleman Community Engagement Librarian
There are plenty of children’s books to choose from for this Christmas and the summer ahead. Here are two books I have included in my letter to Santa.
The Top Secret Undercover Notes of Buttons McGinty – Book 1, by Rhys Darby
Written in the same book-style as the infamous Treehouse books by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton, with a handwritten font and plenty of ‘random’ sketches, Darby brings us a slice of his awkward, Kiwi humour and out-of-this-world absurdity. It’s aimed at kids aged 8-15 years and is such fun!
J.K Rowling’s screen play of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald is available this month. This is the second screenplay in a five film series to be written by J.K Rowling. The story of mystery and magic continues an amazing new chapter in the wizarding world. It has some surprising nods to Harry Potter stories and will delight fans of both the films and books.
We are lucky to have an amazing collection of children’s books in our library so why not come in and have a browse. A library card and one of our gorgeous library bags (only $6) would be a great gift for anyone.
Don’t forget to register for our Summer Reading programme this week. It’s going to be a great summer with lots of books, prizes and fun. Kids from 3 to 12 can participate in The Amazing Read. It’s free and all they need to do is bring their library card or come in and join. It’s easy!
From the 10th of January participants can pop into their local library and chat about what they have read to one of our friendly librarians. Each time participants report in, they will receive a special prize. If they check in four times over the summer they receive an invitation to the finale event and are gifted a brand new book.
We will have lots of events and activities at each of our Horowhenua Libraries every day from the 10th of December until the 18th January. Our hardworking librarians will take a wee break between the 24th and 6th January, to read all the books Santa will no doubt bring them, provided they have been good, of course.
Library Feedback prize draw
Thanks to all who filled in our library feedback forms and entered the draw to win $20 credit to their library account. Your feedback makes a difference by helping inform our future planning. Congratulations to Keita Koolen. Mrs Koolen was delighted with her prize, which means she can borrow some of our amazing rental fiction title for free. We are delighted that the prize went to a self-confessed book worm. Look out for more book giveaway competitions on our Facebook site. It could be you next time!
