Friends of the Libraries
Pam Coleman Community Engagement Librarian
What is a friend? A dictionary search for the definition of friend brings up many different meanings of the word. All over the world there are subtle differences in meaning.
Each definition of a friend has common values – empathy, honesty, generosity, encouragement and steadfastness.
The Horowhenua Libraries applaud The Friends of Horowhenua Libraries and the 30 years of upholding these qualities. Together we celebrate their support for the libraries of the future.
Libraries need Friends. Many public Libraries were established through the efforts of individuals who understood the value of libraries to their communities and also understood that libraries need community support to flourish. In our constantly changing environment and the impact of the technological revolution on our community, the generosity and steadfastness of the Friends is key to the continued delivery of excellent services to all of our community.
When you look behind the curtains of Horowhenua’s highly successful community hubs, you will almost inevitably find Friends working behind the scenes making sure the library is strong, relevant and well-supported.
Libraries need Friends – your efforts are important. Thank you!
Summer Reading Programme
The Amazing Read
Make the most of summer and join our Summer Reading Challenge!
All you need is to be a member of the Library.
“The Amazing Read” is offered to children aged 3 to 11. Children are required to report-in a minimum of four times to successfully complete the programme; this requires them to talk one-on-one with a librarian about their reading. The children are rewarded for their efforts with an incentive each time they report-in. Children who complete 4 report-ins are invited to the Finale.
All of this is offered free of charge from libraries in the Eastern and Central Region thanks to the funding of the Eastern and Central Community Trust.
Registrations for the programme take place from 26th November. The actual programme runs from the 10th of December.
Horowhenua Libraries will also be offering daily craft activities at all of our libraries. We also have 2 free performances from The Little Dog Barking Storytellers and Zappo the Magician.
Pop into your local library or go online for more details.
